Ritual in the process of history: a diachronic-semiotic perspective on the winter caroling tradition in Rzeszów Region

Keywords: Winter carolling, folklore, Rzeszów region, Slavic mythology, semiotics

Abstract:
The article deals with descriptions of folk winter caroling in the Rzeszów region in the 19th and 20th centuries. The issue addressed concerns the relationship between the semantics and syntax of caroling and folk cosmology, in the context of diachronic research on Slavic mythology. The author compares individual elements of the rite with corresponding mythems and relevant Proto-Slavic lexicon. The aim of the analysis is to identify the basic elements of the Rzeszów winter caroling tradition, present in other Balto-Slavic cultures, whose genealogy may trace back to Slavic mythological and belief foundations. The semiotic-structural method was used for the analysis of individual phenomena, and the obtained research results constitute the reconstructed invariant symbolic structures of the rite, indicating its close relationship with Proto-Slavic cosmology.
