Cultural anthropology and archaeology: ethnoarchaeology in Toruń II

Keywords: ethnoarcheology, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, history of science, history of archaeology

Abstract:
The text presents the history of ethnoarchaeology, a teaching and research specialty that was developed in the early 1990s at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń by young scientific staff with a humanistic and anthropological orientation. The aim of the article is to showcase the historical contexts accompanying the emergence of ethnoarchaeology, along with an attempt to understand the reasons for the significant resistance to its acceptance as a separate field of didactics by the Institute’s management. The text serves as a supplement to the article by J. Kowalewski, addressing the indicated topic in the publication presented in volume 9 of the Yearbook of Anthropology of History in 2016. It is based on private archives and memoirs of authors from the first years of work at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.
