Keywords: Wilhelm Schmidt, Southeast Asia Languages, Museology, „Catholic ethnology”, Anthropos-Institute,

Abstract:
Known for his theory of primordial monotheism, Wilhelm Schmidt is regarded as an "institution man" whose research interests transcend ethnology and theology. This article presents the lesser-known areas of Schmidt's research, namely his contributions to the linguistic study of Southeast Asia, his museum work in establishing the Museum of Missiology and Ethnology at the Lateran, and his vision of ethnology at the service of theology, which, despite methodological errors, contributed to the intensive study of the hunter-gatherer peoples and the preservation of their heritage. Despite legitimate criticisms, Schmidt's work is an important contribution to science.
