Genesis of the Balts in the light of genetics and archaeology
Keywords: Baltic peoples, archaeogenetics, Corded Ware culture, Indo-European languages
Abstract: The text presents a transcript of a lecture delivered by the author during the Baltic Workshops at the Museum of Warmia and Masuria in Olsztyn on April 22, 2010. The author analyzes the genesis of Baltic peoples, correlating findings from linguistics, archaeology, and genetics. He begin by presenting findings made by linguistics regarding the history of Indo-European languages, then connect the results of these studies with archaeological discoveries. Hypotheses constructed on this basis are reinforced by genetic research results showing genetic diversity in Europe. Based on this, the author presents an archaeological hypothesis regarding the migration and expansion of the Corded Ware culture in Central Europe and the Baltic region. The author suggests that around 3400-3200 BC, a group of Indo-Europeans reached Central Europe, including the territories of Poland, leading to the emergence of specific culture - Corded Ware culture. This culture then spread westward and along the Baltic coast, giving rise to local variants. The expansion of this culture towards Finland marked the beginning of the Baltic peoples and Baltic Finns.
