Motyw bobra w kulturze antycznej i średniowiecznej ¬– między toposem literackim a rzeczywistością

Abstrakt:
Artykuł przedstawia motyw bobra w literaturze średniowiecznej. W pierwszej części studium przeprowadzona została genetyczna analiza źródeł średniowiecznego motywu bobra w starożytnej literaturze, która wskazała na pluralizm podejść do opisu tego zwierzęcia i silne zakorzenienie wczesnochrześcijańskich tekstów w tradycji antycznej. Pochodzenie tego motywu jest niepewne, co zostało udowodnione przy pomocy krytyki źródłowej bajek Ezopa i Historii Herodota. Topos bobra został przekształcony w Fizjologu i Etymologiach Izydora z Sewilli, dzieła te czerpały wybiórczo informacje z wybranych źródeł, tak by dostosować przekaz pasował do założeń autorów. Od momentu powstania Fizjologa do przełomu XII/XIII wieku antyczny pluralizm podejść do opisu bobra został ograniczony i poddany wymogom pisarstwa chrześcijańskiego. Badanie motywu bobra stało się również okazją do zabrania głosu w długiej dyskusji na temat pochodzenia Fizjologa. W pisarstwie pełnego średniowiecza widoczna jest sprzeczność między fantazyjnymi informacjami przekazywanymi przez tradycję wczesnochrześcijańską, obserwacjami Geralda z Walii i odkrytą na nowo wielością podejść autorów antycznych do zoologii. Badanie Itinerarium Cambriae i encyklopedii średniowiecznych oraz źródeł ikonograficznych rzuca nowe światło na pochodzenie i funkcjonowanie motywu bobra w pisarstwie średniowiecznym oraz poszerza naszą wiedzę na temat stosunku człowieka średniowiecza do zwierząt i przyrody w ogólności.
